International Fossil Day held on 11th & 12th October 2018 at Vizag
Andhra Pradesh Natural History Parks and Museums Trust, Vizag and Natural History Society of India celebrated International Fossil Week with exhibitions on fossils on 11th and 12th October, 2018 at Visakhapatnam.
International Fossil Day was celebrated on 11th & 12th October, 2018 at Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan, TPT colony branch, Visakhapatnam and The Presidential School, Bheemili branch respectively. These celebrations were jointly organised by Andhra Pradesh Natural History Parks and Museums Trust, Vizag, Natural History Society of India, Department of Forest, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India. On 11th October, 2018, at Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan, Prof. K.V.Subba Rao, President of Natural History Society of India and Member Secretary of Andhra Pradesh Natural History Parks and Museums Trust, Vizag gave introduction to these celebrations and highlighted the importance of fossil studies. Prof. Kotha Mahender of Goa University, Prof. Nagendra of Anna University explained to the students about fossils, their formation and how fossils help in understanding past history of Earth and its climatic conditions. Child Paleontologist Aswatha Biju mesmerised with her collection of fossils and the way she started collecting fossils since her 5 year age. Star attraction of these celebrations are fossils which were on display for students and parents. Around 100 fossils from different geological time periods along with explanation charts were on display on both the days. Prof. Kotha Mahender of Goa University, Prof. Nagendra from Anna University, Miss. Aswatha Biju, child palaeontologist from Chennai, Prof. Ashok Sahni, well known fossil Scientist from Lucknow and Dr. Kantimani Kulkarni of Biodiversity & Paleobiology, Agharkar Research Institute, Pune contributed to this fossil exhibition with their fossil collection. Gastropods, Brachiopods, Bivalvia, Cephalopoda, Echinoidea fossils from Ariyaluru sub basin, Tamilnadu, Narmada Valley, Miocene, Eocene, Jurassic period fossils from Kachchh, Gujarat are main players of this exhibition.
Besides more than 108 students of this school, parents of the students also visited this exhibition and interacted with experts.
Dr.Vijay Kumar of Vijay Nirman, Sri C.Selvam, DFO, Visakhapatnam, Dr.Shaik Jeelani, Scientist-in-Residence, KSR Trust, Sri C.Satyanarayana were also present during the celebrations.
Principal of the school, Smt. A. Indira and its administrator Smt. Anne Shailaja, students and teachers participated in this programme enthusiastically and made this a grant success.
On 12th October, 2018, 2nd International Fossil Day was celebrated at The Presidential School, Bheemili. Prof. Kotha Mahender, Prof.Nagendra and Miss.Aswatha Biju gave power point presentations on fossils and the importance of their study. More than 400 students visited the exhibition during the day. Experts interacted with students and answered their questions with explanations. President Anand and Principal ably conducted the sessions.
